Connected photo frame: how does it work and which one to choose?

A connected photo frame is a screen that displays photos sent remotely by family from a phone. Unlike a classic digital photo frame, you don't need a USB stick or a memory card: photos arrive on their own, over the internet. Familink is a connected photo frame designed in France that works even without Wi-Fi thanks to its built-in 4G SIM card.

In brief

How does a connected photo frame work?

  1. You send a photo

    From the frame's app (Android, iOS), a website or an e-mail. With Familink, you can also use WhatsApp and Messenger.

  2. The photo travels over the internet

    It reaches the frame within seconds, over Wi-Fi or, for Familink, over the 4G network.

  3. The frame displays it

    The frame automatically displays the new photo and adds it to the slideshow. The person receiving it has nothing to do.

Wi-Fi is the weak point of many connected frames when they are given to an older person: in France, 59% of people aged 75 or over have not used the internet in the last three months, and someone has to be on site to set up the network, then set it up again if the router changes.

How to choose the right connected photo frame?

1. The connection: Wi-Fi only or 4G?

If the person receiving the frame has an internet router and can manage it, a Wi-Fi frame is enough. Otherwise, choose a frame with a SIM card: the Familink frame comes with a pre-activated 4G SIM card and connects as soon as it is plugged in. It can also use Wi-Fi.

2. Simplicity for the person receiving it

Look at what the person will have to do every day: buttons, menus, settings. The Familink frame has no menu and no settings: photos appear on their own, you swipe a finger to scroll through them, and a "Like" button lets the recipient thank whoever sent them.

3. How the family sends photos

Check the ways to send (app, e-mail, messaging apps) and how many people can send photos to the same frame. With Familink: iOS and Android app, website, e-mail, WhatsApp and Messenger, and an unlimited number of senders.

4. What the frame displays

Photos only, or also videos, messages and voice messages? The Familink frame displays photos and text messages with the free plan. With Familink Plus, photos are unlimited and the family can also send videos and voice messages.

5. The screen

Size, resolution, touchscreen. The Familink frame has a 10-inch touchscreen at 1280 × 800.

6. The real price: purchase and subscriptions

Beyond the price of the frame, look at what you have to pay for afterwards: storage, premium features, mobile connection. With Familink:

  • frame: €219.90 to buy, 2-year warranty;
  • Familink Basic (10 photos per day, text messages): free, included with the frame;
  • Familink Plus (unlimited photos, videos, voice messages): €4.90 per month or €53.90 per year, no commitment;
  • 4G option: €5.90 per month or €64.90 per year, 3 months free with the purchase of the frame, no commitment;
  • or all-inclusive rental (frame, Familink Plus, 4G, lifetime warranty): from €14.99 per month, no commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a connected photo frame work without Wi-Fi?

Most connected frames need Wi-Fi. The Familink frame, on the other hand, contains a 4G SIM card: it receives photos without an internet router or Wi-Fi.

Do you need a subscription for a connected photo frame?

It depends on the model. With Familink, the Basic plan is free (10 photos per day and text messages); Familink Plus (€4.90 per month) adds unlimited photos, videos and voice messages, and the 4G option (€5.90 per month) lets you do without Wi-Fi. Both are also available as annual subscriptions (€53.90 and €64.90 per year), with no commitment.

Can you send photos to a connected frame from abroad?

Yes, photos travel over the internet: you can send them from anywhere. The Familink frame works over 4G in every country where the mobile network is available, so it can also be installed at the home of a relative who lives abroad.

Which connected photo frame should you give to an older person?

A frame they won't have to set up: no Wi-Fi to enter, no menu, with a large enough screen. This is what Familink was designed for.

How many people can send photos to the frame?

With Familink, the number of people is unlimited. Everyone sends from their phone, their computer or by e-mail.
